iPhone simulator binaries can't be run on an iPod/iPhone so I'm pretty sure
it's x86 code being run in some minimal sandbox which controls API usage.

Subject: [android-developers] Re: emulator speed

Does the iPhone emulator runs ARM binaries, if not, it simply is crazy fast
because it runs x86 code instead of the stuff that actually goes into a real
device. The Android "simulator" build product does the same thing and is
very fast (on the other hand everything runs in a single process, so don't
test your apps with it :-))

I can understand the latter but not the former!
