I would guess a chunk of the performance difference comes from the fact that
the iPhone shares a lot of APIs with Mac OS and as the iPhone emulator only
runs on Mac OS they can make calls directly to the OS, whereas the Android
emulator runs on a hardware emulator and thus has an extra level of
processing to do.

Also, if your 2Ghz Athlon X2 is the Athlon X2 3800 then an iMac from 2 years
ago or the current bottom of the range mac mini would have just under 20%
more CPU power according to http://www.cpubenchmark.net/common_cpus.html
(3800x2=CPU mark of 901, iMac 2Ghz Duo=1056).

PC is fairly up-to-date spec - AMD Athlon X2 2 GHz, 2 GB's of RAM.

Mac I don't have (yet), but I have been trolling on iPhone forums and have
heard that iPhone emulator is unrealistically fast.
