I guess the same thing happened to me because of some conflict between my installed Java Runtime Environment version used by Ecplise Ganymede and the one that is needed for installing the android plugin. I deinstalled my Eclipse, installed another JRE (since I use Kubuntu 8.10 I installed the one offered by the Adept package manager) and than reinstalled Eclipse again. After doing so everything works fine. + Hope that fixes your problem as well. Regards.
