Having the app installed with two different certs used for signing would have definitely caused a problem. What's your app? What does logcat say when you try to download?
As far as paying for your own app, I think you do, not really sure. This is pretty simple to test and it doesn't seem like giving yourself money is a problem, per se, although perhaps inconvenient.
