Thank you. That provided the hint I needed to figure out what was happening.
It turns out that if your Eclipse project name has a space in it, there's no problem whatsoever before you sign the .apk; after you sign it, though, it won't install. Something breaks when there's a space in the project name. So if you have a version called "MyApp Lite", it fails to install. "MyAppLite" works. The alarming thing is that when you upload an app to Market, the problem is not detected - it only happens when you download it to a phone. So you could upload an app, be certain it's available on Market, but nobody can download it. Scary thought, isn't it?
