So, let me re-state my original question slightly so that's it's
clearer why I'm asking:

My friend has got himself ADP1. He currently has firmware 1.0 (the
stuff that was in it when he bought it last year). He wants his
firmware to always be up-to-date but he is not interested in hacking
anything and I am not sure he can handle updating using update.zip
from the SD card. He certainly does not know what to download from
here to do the update.

Because he has firmware 1.0, I now have to update his phone by hand
anyway. My question was, what firmware to put on his phone so that
both of these conditions are fulfilled:
1) He has an access to as many recent Android features as possible
(NOT including root, he doesn't need that for anything).
2) He can update the firmware himself in the future, as easily as
possible (he is definitely NOT watching any developer sites and
doesn't know where to download Android images and what to do with
them).

So, under the circumstances, it would probably be best to install EU
or US G1 build 1.5 on his phone (not ADP build, because then he loses
access to paid Market apps and ability to update automatically or from
Settings menu)? Are there any differences between EU and US build?
