It's my opinion that my question basically boils down to "Is it
possible to update ADP1 official firmware without downloading
something by hand, renaming it and putting anything on SD card?" and I
consider this question very relevant for Android developers. And I
still do not see a definitive answer to this question. I'll gladly ask
in more relevant list but I don't know about any more relevant list.
(This is not any attempt at being smartass, I really don't know about
any list more appropriate for this question, even after searching for
"android phone" in Google Groups.)

You are probably right about "flashing ADP1 with T-Mobile build" not
being strictly legal. I admit this didn't occure to me and I thought
that both ADP1 and T-Mobile images are being officially offered as a
download to anyone who paid $400 for ADP1. It seems they are not. I
never tried downloading them and I never needed them. I have stock
ADP1 firmware in my own ADP1.

If I understand you correctly then I think you are mistaken because I
know of several people who bought T-Mobile G1s in our country, they
use them with different carriers than T-Mobile (which is perfectly
legal over here, I don't know about other countries) and yet they
receive correct OTA updates.
