I have no idea what google is up to with android, but already built
hardware: google mini, google search appliance.
Their mission statement says that they collect information and make
them accessible. Those machines mentioned above do this! The access
part could also involve the creation of mobile devices that provide
universal access to private, local (tied to google mini,
intranet, ...) and worldwide data. Maybe, this idea also expands to
laptops, pc like hardware or intelligent router boxes for internet,
managing your PCs in your intranet (i.e. backup your data and make it
accessible on the go).
But after all, if you want to sell something, you need a market.
Therefore i hope i'll get a decent android device soon and we'll see
how this story develops ;)
