I fired the original post to the list to get feedback, so all is welcome.

One of the factors in the decision making process was that the feedback 
I've seen from users indicates they don't want a directory of 
applications they can't download, they only want to see apps that if 
they like the sound of them they can download and install they to give 
them a spin. AndAppStore doesn't (currently) have a mechanism of 
charging for applications so listing only free apps in the main areas 
gives the double benefit of doing what users have asked for and 
promoting free apps.

A ranking system is in the works, but what I'd ideally like to see is 
demo version for pay-for apps listed because, after all, a lot of us 
like to try something out before parting with some cash.
