While I appreciate the gesture for those who give away their work, my opinion as a user is I'd rather the existing mechanisms (ranking system, search, latest) be the tools to float the apps to the top. Otherwise; the site will likely be considered the site for free apps. The problem is that by showing only free, you're hiding non-free, which may not be what you (or those developers) had in mind. It depends on what you want your site to specialize in, and how to differentiate it from others stores.
Just one opinion, of course. A good search will allow a user to specify Free if desired.
