Actually, Google *did* mention a year ago that programming an email client would be a good idea: http://code.google.com/android/adc.html "* Social networking * Media consumption, management, editing, or sharing, e.g., photos * Productivity and collaboration such as ***email***, IM, calendar, etc. " But you are right, they should have said that they would only provide a very basic email client so that developers would have had a larger incentive to create one...
