"so I don't think one can generalize from it to the whole movie business"

The point was that large Hollywood movies, similar to big production games
by companies like EA, would have a difficult time finding profits from a
system that allows users to get an easy refund after they've enjoyed the
product.

"There's no guarantee of riches or even sales from the Android Market."

Absolutely, but it's even worse when people can use and severely abuse a
product return system

"Retail stores have lots of costs associated with having physical locations
and managing physical inventory."

Consumers who abuse return policies hurt the retailers and the
manufacturers. Just as they hurt the small-time developer or the large
corporate developer. Whether someone has high overhead or low, is entirely
irrelevant.

If Best Buy or Wal-Mart were all digital, would they let consumers walk in,
buy movies, software, magazines, and music CD's, then allow them to return
them a few days later? Over and over and over? Even with no overhead of
storage or shipping, it would still be a big problem.

Who knows, maybe a large retailer might benefit from this virtual
'free-rental' system of refunds, by luring customers to purchase other
products in the store.

Is that what the Android Market needs? "Welcome to the Android Market.
Applications and games can be used free for 24 hour rental...er..purchase
periods."

"I'm not particularly in favor of the current return policy, but I can see
how it's not necessarily bad, just different."

This is all about points of view. My view is that unless the 24 hour
rental...I mean 'return' policy is changed, the Android phone will not be
able to compete in the gaming market. Very few games will profit, and the
bleak outlook for prospective companies to produce software could flatten
future development.
