I agree with OP - I have had people leaving comments which don't even relate to current versions of the product.
Also we have no way of responding to comments even indirectly - all we have is a user id, no e-mail address, so if someone says something in a comment like 'I'm not sure where the download folder is', we could use some of our valuable 325 characters to respond, but unlikely the user would even see this. I also agree with poster 2 that a message board scenario could be dangerous where you could have comments on top of comments - I think this could result in arguments escalating - I think a good model for this could be eBay, i.e. only developer can respond to comments and can only respond to each comment once.
