I wonder how many mysql rebels will be created if oracle tries to bury it. I'm
sure many which in my view will render any attempt to bury mysql useless.

Customers wouldn't be shoo'ed away, they'd be offered an "upgrade".

At least one company I have worked for was bought by a competitor primarily
to remove the company from the market. All the customers were offered
cross-grades or upgrades with special introductory pricing.

My view is that Java will stay, Solaris will get rolled into Linux, and
MySQL will get merged into a future version of Oracle. That way Oracle get
to keep a globally strong brand (Java), get support cost savings by reducing
the number of supported platforms (by taking out Solaris), and get increased
sales by removing a strong competitor and replacing it with a product that
offers an easy migration to their more expensive packages.

I think they should preserve MySql. They are not paying 7 billion odd
dollars to close down all existing businesses of Sun, shoo away their
customers and shut down all marketing channels in the process .
However, the enterprise version may get costly..very costly.

I suppose we shall see what's going to happen with MySQL.

My concern is what happens to MySQL, as SUN just bought them.
Will Oracle continue with MySQL development or will they try and
phase out one of their biggest threats in the database market?
