I experienced, with my app, that visibility in the Market application on the phone is a BIG factor on sales.
I updated my app last Friday and my sales increased 1000% (10 times) for the next two/three days. I think this happened because an updated app moves to the top of the 'sorted by date' list. For these two days it did not get drowned out by the huge amounts of free apps. Right now, it is sinking lower on the 'sorted by date' list and sales start coming back to what they were before.
