If you re-read my first posting you will find out that I am not asking for a rooted phone in the first place. My argument is this: a phone like G1 should have vpn (and should have some smartness as a phone). Lets assume someone wants to do a vpn app. It's really of no use to do that _only_ for rooted phones - that is no interesting market. On the other hand it really looks like it cannot be done from a third party for non-rooted phones (can you change the routing table as non-root?).
