I think the distance between positions on this discussion is too great, but
from my position

1. An email is not the same as an SMS message, as an email message requires
a SMTP server (as mentioned) and also a network connection, which is not
always available. Further, it requires the recipient to have a smart device,
which is not as likely as we in the first/second wave adoption communities
may think.

2. A social netowrk is not the same as email, and any intelligent design
would provide both user level controls, as well as administrative controls
at the enterprise level to manage both attention clutter and institutional
policy or risk issues.

Simply declaring things as junk or useless (even Microsoft) rarely sees the
big picture, full of nuance and discovery.

LB, you're a bit off with SMS being a stop gap.

SMS was designed to send messages to 'phone users back when cellular
bandwidth was very limited (things like voicemail notifications, etc.). SMS
messaging today has more unique users than email around the world, and many
of its users use it more frequently than they do email.

As for emails being more easily sent, that's only true if you have access to
an SMTP server, and some networks limit the SMTP servers you can access so
your settings at home may not work abroad.

As for email doing all that SMS can, that's just not true because SMS
messages have a robust sender authentication system which email does not,
and SMSs can be labelled as network broadcast by a network operator and so
can be designed for use by the phone (e.g. to modify APN settings), whereas
Email doesn't have this feature.
