But - It feels like they almost went out of their way (HTC that is) to make
it harder to use...

Its a branch of 2.6.27 if i remember correctly, with lots of 2.6.29 patches
pulled into it, merged with a load of HTC's own changes - all thats fine ...
BUT - its had *all the revision history stripped*.. So trying to port the
hero specifics from it into the AOSP kernel is nearly impossible... and .29
is needed for android 2.0+
