In the same email they also say that, for the 512px icon, "the Android icon design guidelines located at http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/ui_guidelines/icon_design.html apply." Yet the new 512px version doesn't allow alpha transparency... so you can't follow the guidelines anyway. WTF?
A bit more guidance on how these graphics will be used would be very helpful too. The "Feature Graphic" is a fine example... should this be a large-format screenshot? An advertising-type image? In what context will it be presented to the user? I'm sure these things will become clear with time, but for now, trying to figure out what to add to an app listing is pure guesswork.
