Since we have little guidance from the market team, we can only make assumptions.
One might guess that this icon could be used in printed material too. 512x512 in the printed world could be quite small at 600dpi. Google has added a "marketing opt-out" checkbox that has "Do not promote my application except in Android Market and in any Google- owned online or mobile properties" which makes me think they could use this artwork in some sort of promotional thing.
