Actually it does .... there would be nothing behind the transparency
area of a printed icon except the paper, which would really look
unprofessional and just plain bad...

One might guess that this icon could be used in printed material too.
512x512 in the printed world could be quite small at 600dpi.
Google has added a "marketing opt-out" checkbox that has "Do not
promote my application except in Android Market and in any Google-
owned online or mobile properties" which makes me think they could use
this artwork in some sort of promotional thing. Think posters, hand
outs, TV ads, Google TV promos, etc. All that would require much more
detailed art than the standard low res icon we're using operationally.
