Well... if you don't want that then you have something in your app that
forces the updates. It's so simple to do that there is no reason not to.

Another issue is that apps become obsolete. One does not want users to
be finding and downloading obsolete versions of your app.

For me as a developer I would not want someone else publishing my
free apps. You cannot redistribute even free applications without the
consent of the creator.
Typical case is if the developer decides to include ads in a later
version, he does not want others to switch to an older version
without. Another case is a security flaw. A protection against that
is typically an expiration date of the apk.
I have already sent one or two notices to different websites, hosting
a copy of apk's i have solely published through the Android Market.
They were very quick to remove these.
In my opinion, it is piracy - it does not matter if an app is paid
for or not.

Can someone tell me if there is anything that would stop someone from
setting up a web site or store which is basically a backup archive of
different versions of free Android market applications?
(Yes, free application only. No paid apks)
i.e. someone/user download applications from Android market,
backup on
his phone, upload it online and then share it to the public.
If there isn't, why didn't web sites like appbrain, androlib.com
<http://androlib.com>,
cyrket.com <http://cyrket.com> provide the apks to download?
If there is, can someone explain?
I know there are some kind people who have setup such web site to
share their Android applications backup, so that those without access
to Android market can access apks, but I have yet to see a large
scale
version of this....
Would someone me tell me why? or is there already one somewhere?
