Not enough evidence for me. Standing in front of "anxious app
developers" is enough to motivate someone to say that, even with no
real intention of doing something about it.

My question is
Is Google *really* concerned about having a healthy market for paid
apps? Why would they be?

Don't they donate the profits from 30% of app sales to the carriers?
On the other hand they own Admob and Adsense. Following the money,
they should be all in favor of free apps with ads.

Has Google tried charging money for any of their apps? Nope.

Has Google diluted markets through its free apps, that might otherwise
support paid apps? Yes. How many of the iphone apps are things like
'find the nearest pizza places'. Google Maps and Places strive to do
all that and more.

I believe that, compared to iPhone users, Android users use apps less
and the browser more, and therefore perform more web searches. I can't
imagine Google as a whole being sad about that.

Or maybe they are concerned about having a healthy market for paid
apps because it would allow developers to create better quality apps
than they could on ad revenue alone, thereby increasing consumers
satisfaction with the platform and encouraging developers to commit to
the platform for the long term?

Maybe so, but that is a pretty complex thought, easily drowned out by
a simpler thought: "We make money on ads".
