I think it is critical that you reply to comments in the market. As long as you clearly identify yourself as the developer (for instance, the name of the person I comment as, is the name of my app).
While is may be against the terms of service (I am not sure this is the case) - it is very common practice, and until Google gives us a way to reply to comments directly, this is the only way to do it.
