Glad I could help eliminate your frustration Elaine! I don't know what stupid program put a .nomedia file in your root directory. How lame!
The .nomedia file tells the operating system not to scan for media on the SD card in the folder which it resides. For example, image viewers and mp3 players won't autoload these files. Also, it works recursively, meaning that it applies to all subfolders as well.
