Preaching to the choir, though I think simply removing software from the
list of things that's patentable would be an easier battle than trying
to overhaul the entire system.

Costs of, e.g., pharmaceutical development make patents necessary for a
reasonable ROI -- and big pharma has a lot of money, so you don't want
to be up against their lobbyists. :)
