The headline is inaccurate. Google hasn't intervened in any lawsuit.
It has applied to have the patents reexamined. This is a good thing, because the lawsuit that is in progress may not examine the validity of the patents - it may only assert that Apple's license extends to its developers - or not. In 2-3 years, there's a chance those patents could be scaled. But it may not change the situation appreciably for those who have already or will receive a letter from LodSys.
