Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure about the use of the word "ethical", but I do appreciate your point. If it's the only "right" way to do it if distributing on Google Play is to use Google Wallet, then so be it. Apple certainly does the same thing. I note, though, that Google purports to be much more open but still locks you down with the only marketplace most people know about. Particularly in Australia, alternatives to Google Play are more or less unknown.
My question is really whether anyone has used other APIs for in-app payments, distributed them on what is now Google Play, and if so, did they have issues? If the answer is, "nobody has done it because it's not allowed", then, well... I'd be extremely surprised. Having a separate APK for the two markets is a good idea though if you can afford it. There is overhead, not just in development, but in setting up multiple accounts. Look, all said and done, if I'm going to distribute on Google Play, then I'm almost certainly going to use Wallet.
