I used to think that they were useless until i started working for a start
up in the app monetization space.
Banner ads don't make a lot of money.  With the range of other options, i
would never put banner ads in any of my apps again.

A lot of these are perfect for free apps, specially those without in-app
purchasing.
In the start up i work for, i've seen developers make decent money using
these networks.
Sometimes it makes me wonder if i should go back to app development.

The one i work for is called PaeDae.  I've evaluated many options and the
only other one that comes close to the same revenue is Chartboost.

AdMob is pretty pitiful in comparison.
