it'll *work* but the extra writes will wear out your card much
faster so best avoided.

   i suspected as much, so it's nice to have that clarified.  but is it
possible that ext3 journalling is causing some of those I/O errors you
can see in my posted first-time boot output?

If you actually look at the I/O errors, you'll see that their are from the mtdblock devices, not the SD card. It has been posted on the beagleboard list numerous times before that that's due to linux not getting the 'hwecc' format the x-load partition is written as (it needs to be in 'hwecc' due to a limitation in the omap3 bootrom).
