I know where you are coming from and can not argue regarding this point.
For me closed source here mean : vmware is not an open source
solution... in comparaison with xen.org, kvm, qemu or proxmox ve.

I'm pretty sure Coraid did not have had the choice on this point but it
is a question to ask to Vmware and/or Coraid.

We are more or less in the same situation with Citrix XenServer but have
been able to release and maintain a community package for 3 years :

So if it was easy to do the same on vmware then I can not imagine no one
