Hi Roland, De HBA is only a necissity on ESX, but coraid is promoting the HBA for other operating systems too. You can download drivers for the HBA for Windows, Linux, Solaris and ESX. (see http://www.coraid.com/support/downloads). There are existing software drivers for AoE on Solaris, OS/X, FreeBDS, and Windows, but all the pointers to these drivers are removed from Coraids website, with an exception for the Linux aoe module.
We use Coraid boxes with both the HBA and the software driver on solaris (nexenta), and with the software driver on linux. It all works without problems. With the software drivers it can be a bit more work to get things working and to do proper monitoring. I guess coraid is promoting the HBA's over the software drivers, because it offers less oppertunity to make crappy configurations (i.e. they can give more reliable specs).
