Some guesses are better than others.

Anyway, as you're interested in guesses, part of the slowdown in
compilation is probably due to the conversion from NFA to DFA, so if
you write a more explicit regex, you might shave some time off the
compilation, but it won't be much and it won't do anything about the
runtime effects I mentioned. Additionally, if you're using the same
regex in multiple places, you could consider making them a paradigm,
so it only needs to be converted once.
