Hello all,
I've been lurking for some time on the mailinglist and have decided to
introduce myself.
I am a student in ICT ("Master en STIC <http://mastic.ulb.ac.be>") at the
Université Libre de Bruxelles as a 'Master after Master' and am currently
writing my master's thesis under the direction of Prof. Pierrette Bouillon.
The aim of the thesis is to compare the efficiency of different translation
tools, not only on the "correctness" of the translation but also on the
usability of the tool (web version?/cost/management/etc) for small
businesses. Being a Belgian, I am focusing on the French-Dutch pair. In
order to facilitate my work, I've been advised to restrict the domain to a
minimum to avoid bad translations and ensure near-to-perfect translations.
The domain I have chosen is real estate: there are many ads on the web that
are available, and the language used contains close-to-zero ambiguities.
In order to do so, I have made plans to develop 'my own' dictionaries of
fr-nl with only the words found in the 'source' ads. Apertium will yield,
hopefully, high-level results for the limited real estate domain. If this
is the case, the dictionaries and transfer rules will of course be
available if anyone wants them -- I am not too sure as how to present the
pair, there is an existing fr-nl in the incubator and 'my' pair would be
the only 'specialized' pair on the wiki.
If it all goes well, after I am finished with my thesis I am going to work
on the real fr-nl pair (around September of this year), so if anyone's
interested to share the workload, do not hesitate to contact me!
