I use the star field to flag tasks that I want to get done today but
don't have a specific due date. And I have turned on the option to
display 'starred' tasks in the Hotlist so I see both due tasks and
starred tasks.

Regarding your earlier question about contexts and tags, I also follow
the GTD method so contexts are either a location or a resource (mine
are Home, Work, Phone, Online, Errands). Tags for me are like areas of
focus, e.g. business, personal, family. This gives me the ability to
see all work-related tasks irrespective of context and the same for
personal.
