It depends on the spreadsheet program you're using. E.g., in ClarisWorks, it's
        Select the row or column
     then       "Format menu" --> "Number..." --> [Checkbox] 
"Negatives in (  )"
      or        Command + Shift + N                     --> [Checkbox] 
"Negatives in (  )"
