Cheez!!! You forced me to actually start up AW 5.1. Try oa-L. That might do
the trick.  When I entered a negative number in an unformatted cell, it
viewed as -5. When I changed the layout, oa-L, to "comma", it viewed as (5).
There are other layout choices as well.

(But, you were right that when I suggested oa-O I was inadvertently thinking
database, not spreadsheet.)
