Hi, folks.

I'm new to this list and was hoping some of you could
provide me some advice about putting an Apple IIgs to
work.

Welcome to the apple2list. ^_^

I've had a couple for a while but haven't done much
with them. I believe they have 1 meg of RAM. I've got
the 3.5" and 5.25" floppy drives but no hard drive.

Somesort of mass storage would defenantly be nice... also more than 1MB of ram would be nice too.

I've got some GS/OS software I downloaded somewhere
and few other bits of software here and there on old
floppies I've acquired over time.

You can get tons and tons of software from this place:
<http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/>
This place has tons of Applications, Games, Educational Programs, and Operating Systems. All with Screen shots and often reviews of them as well as a breif description of what they do.

I'd like to make one of the IIgses more usable for
everyday work, such as word processing and printing,
and I'd love to do e-mail or the Internet on one of
these puppies if possible.

I hope you don't mind putting a little money into your IIgs. ^_^

Some questions:

I've tried daisy-chaining more than one 3.5" floppy
drive, but neither machine ever seems to recognize
more than one 3.5" drive, although I've read that this
can be done.

The proper way to hook two 5.25" and two 3.5" drives into your smart port is t he following:

Computer > 3.5 drive 1 > 3.5 drive 2 > 5.25 drive 1 > 5.25 drive 2

It is not recomended that you hook more than 4 drives to the Smartport as each one increases the load on the Powersupply in the IIgs.

I bought a card to add an extra meg of RAM but could
never get it to work in either machine. Was I doing
something wrong, or did I likely have a bad card?

1MB of ram is good for gaming... but if you want to do other things I'd seriously consider more RAM. you need at least 2MB to use GS OS 6.0.1

There is a nice new 4MB RAM card out called the RAM-4-GS. They are sold by GarberStreet Enterprises. <http://garberstreet.netfirms.com/> Please understand that I heard Bill Garber recently went to the hospital and may not be able to respond right away...but I'm sure he'll get back to you as soon as he can.

What is the best and easiest way to get some sort of
hard drive working for a IIgs?

There are three options that I can think of. A Hardcard, SCSI, or CFFA. If you'd like to hook up a CD ROM drive to your IIgs, I'd recomend going the SCSI rout... if you want to keep the cable spagetti down, I'd recomend some sort of Hard card.

A hard card is an IDE interface that plugs into a slot and has an IDE drive mounted on it.

The CFFA is a card that allows you to use a compact flash card, such as one that would go in a digital camera, as a hard drive. It's very compact and convenient. It also has an IDE port for a regular hard drive as well. Unfortunantly the last one was sold a little while ago... however a third run may be made if enough interest is shown. The site for the CFFA card is <http://dreher.net/?s=projects/CFforAppleII&c=projects/CFforAppleII/main.php>

What kind of printer can I use? Do I need to add
anything to the IIgs to use a printer?

I currently use an Apple Image Writer II on my IIgs when I need to print out trade invoices or game instructions. You can use other printers through the use of third party drivers... Its not to difficult to find it if you know where to start from. (I'll get to that soon enough) You can use the imagewriter II and some other printers using one of the IIgs's built in serial ports.

What about e-mail or the Internet? Is it possible?
What kind of modem or software do I need? Seems to me
I read somewhere that there's a way of doing this, but
I don't remember where or what it is. Also, I know
virtually nothing about bulletin board systems.

Well, one, you need to have a hard drive, you need at least 4MB of ram...and browsing webpages will be very very painfull without an Accelerator... if you're serious about this I'd suggest watching e-bay for a Transwarp GS or Zip GS... my Transwarp GS ran me about $250 (they've gone for less, but I was getting impatient)

You will also need the software nessassary for the IIgs to do TCP/IP. This software is called Marenetti on the IIgs and is currently at version 3.0. More info about this can be found at: <http://www.apple2.org/marinetti/index.html> If you want the latest version, don't download the one from that page, instead, go to the sourcefore.net link found on that page and download it there.

Also, if you intend to connect by way of DSL or Cable modem, you'll need an ethernet card. ///Systeme in Germany currently sells one called the LanceGS for $115... you can find out more info on them at <http://lancegs.a2central.com/>

I've looked at some of the Web sites mentioned on Low
End Mac on the page about the Apple 2 list, but
they're either pretty complicated or don't have a lot
of good information for the beginner.

Can anyone help?

I highly recomend that you check out the CSA2 FAQ's and Links page at:
<http://home.swbell.net/rubywand/A2FAQs1START.html>

That is a very usefull place and most info that you seek can be found by starting there.

I have several Apple IIs and am particularly impressed
with the IIgs. I like to figure out ways to show that
these machines still have practical use.

I have a //c and a IIgs... I never do anything with the //c (no p/s) but the IIgs?...well that's another story all together. ^_^

I really hope that helps. ^_^
