Certain Mac modems require a geoport, which is a port found on the
last 68040 models and most PowerMacs.

If a modem draws power from an AC adapter or from the keyboard
port, you probably have a run of the mill serial modem. If the
modem works on a compact mac or a Macintosh II series machine, you
definitely have a serial modem. Those will work on the IIgs. You
can also use practically every serial modem on the IIgs (eg. if
you have a friend with an external modem for a Windows box, that
should work).
