Ok, Bernie, and any else interested,
I've tried DJPEG32 with 1.6b1 and here are my comments:
Don't bother to try it with Arachne 1,50b2 unless you happen to have a
DPMI service provider in your path - it won't work.
CWSDPMI.exe is included in the 1.6b1 distribution package to fatten it up
a bit, I guess, because Arachne 1.6b1 seems to work without it.
Maybe someone can tell me what it is there for.
The tests: (On my 33Mhz '486 - 640x480x16shades)
Setup: Arachne 1.50b2 Arachne 1.6b1/DJPEG16 Arachne 1.6b1/DJPEG32
Load and
Display JPG
11,322 7 5
33,235 15 14.5 9
185,935 26 24.6 13.5
When one removes the approx 3.5 sec it takes Arachne to paint the screen,
these convert to:
Load JPG
11,322 3.5 1.5
33,235 11.0 5.5
185,935 21.1 10.0
Which can be seen to be almost exactly twice as fast.
But, I think it would be more useful to reduce that 3.5 second paint job.
Since the above improvement won't work at all on a '286 - which NEEDS it
more !
Thanks, Bernie. Now how do we get enough information about Arachne to be
able to write some video drivers in ASM ?
