To all & sundry ...

Today, as the tech on the ISP sat there trying to figure out why my
cable modem wasn't seeming to connect, he seemed a little surprised when
-- after the 3rd reboot and FAIL message -- I asked if their DHCP setup
was in full compliance with the protocol, BOOTP compliant. <G>

But that was nothing compared with what his voice sounded like after I
got a connect and Arachne home page started downloading, and in response
to his "I'm showing good acitivity now," I said I was downloading from
Czechoslovacia [sp?] so I guess there was a connection ... and he said
"good!" and I said "Congratulations! You now have your first DOS cable
modem running!" <MegaGrin>

My first experiments [with web page I knew was horridly graphics
intensive and a comparison d/l of 1.61 [no I haven't installed yet;
wanted to get cable up & running which meant finally getting all the
cabling, phone lines, power cords etc in the office/front room straight
clean & proper after more than a year] showed that what I have said all
along to others is true: It doesn't matter how fast the server is, or
how fast your system is. What matters is how much traffic the server is
dealing with at the time.

According to Arachne, I don't have a Local IP. Interesting ... Where
would I check to see if there is something I don't know about? I
couldn't find any log that had info on this connect. Just curious.

Michael, I did discover one "bell or whistle" I would like added to
Arachne some day. When dialing in it is possible to make a decent
estimate of download time based upon the little red clock. But with
TCP/IP the "online" clock isn't necessary. And the info block only
shows times for full pages. That means I have no way [short of learning
how to use the stop watch on the free "does everything" watch I go from
US News & World Report] of knowing how long it takes a specific file
download. Thus I cannot say "On dial up it took 7minutes 32 seconds to
download Arachne install package, but on cable it took ________"

Yes, I know that doesn't affect how well Arachne runs. Like I said,
just a bell or a whistle. But it would be nice to have some internal
way to time file downloads.

Gotta go get the mail and some breakfast!
