IMHO it's normal to address NIC speed with overhead :)) (eg packet
header/trailor)
And the packet overhead is MUCH smaller than with serial communication :)
PS: I was allways talking about theoretical speed :)
But the much bigger probelm is IMHO retranmission because of 2 parties
sending at the same time ... this can dramatically slow down crowded LANs.
