You have packets ....
Header | much, much data | (trailor)
Header is very small compared to the data ...
The bigger problem is, that 1 parties send 2 packets simultanously ...
than both packets are destroyed, and the parties detect that, and resend
after a random time, their packets.
If the Network is very crowded this causes performance degradation.

For serila communication yes ....
But generally a byte are 8 bits ;))
