Hmmmm......I think someone(s) is forgetting the START BIT (not optional)
and the STOP BIT (at least 1)....

....so, bits-to-bytes = 1start + 8bits per character + 1stop = ~ 10bits
(the start or stop bit is a nonstandard length)
