Hi Tom;
The Loadhigh command (LH) is an INTERNAL command that was added in DOS 5.
That has been maintained as an internl command in later versions of MSDOS.
To use Loadhigh, the line DOS=UMB or DOS=HIGH,UMB must be in config.sys.
These exchanges are very useful to me as they usually make me go look
something up to make sure I don't give bad advice.
I said *usually*. <g> I *do* give bad advice on occasion.
What brand of DOS are you using ?

You wrote that your system was a '486SX. The SX has NO co-processor. AFAIK.
Your bios should state: Co-processor Not Installed on the boot screen.

I, and most others I think, have multiple autoexec.bat and config.sys files.
Different folk handle the swapping differently so I will only describe mine.
To keep it simple, I will only deal with a DOS/Windows switch, althogh I
have three other possible boots.
I have two files in my C:root, autoexec.sav and config.sav.
These are copies of my normal, 90% of the time DOS boot files.
I also have (in my Windows directory), autoexec.win and config.win.
Their purpose is obvious. Windows won't let me run any of the stuff I use in
DOS mode. BTW, I NEVER use Windows for anything except support for Netscape.
And in the Arachne directory, autoexec.web and config.web.
I have to use a special boot for Arachne because I use Hercules video
90% of the time and Arachne wants VGA or EGA video so video memory must
be re-configured. I end up with 64k LESS low DOS memory when using VGA.
I have three (really more) batch files that operate the switching.
Each .bat is in the root of the appropriate drive:
C:\Normal.bat copies the .sav files to their C:\ .bat and .sys and coldboots.
G:\Net.bat copies the.win files as above, coldboots and starts Netscape.
G:\Spider.bat copies the .web files, coldboots and does a LOT of other stuff
- including allowing me to launch a specific version of Arachne or switch
versions.
So, no matter what system I'm in I can switch to any other optimized system
just by typing one word at the DOS prompt.
This is the short description.
Some of the switch bats are complicated but they don't have to be.
I can supply two little .coms I got from PCMag if you wish.
They are Warmboot.com and Coldboot.com.
