I don't know if it works for you, but for me it worked to copy the
file ARACHNE.PCK from another version (and machine) into the current
one. This was the only way to get 16 colors in the 1.50 SRC version,
which never let me choose the video card I used (256k VGA).

So if you have another machine which is working in EGA or CGA mode,
try to copy the file. Else maybe someone can send you an ARACHNE.PCK
from an EGA or CGA setup.
