Hi Sam and all interesting...
My first ribbon printer was an ITHO (Japan) and the ribbon it used was
ordinairy type writer ribbon , not in a case, just loading from the full
to the empty spool. This was easy re-inking.
For my NEC P2200 printer the only ribbon available overhere is
pre-loaded in a new case... but the case has a knob to spool the ribbon
through (endless ribbon) and I use a small brush, like artists use for
painting, to 'wet' the ribbon with the ink/paraffine-oil mixture.
The case is not opened, the gap for the printhead is used.
Well... dirty fingers and a dirty kitchen sink... but good and lasting
printing, almost like a new cartridge. Pitty the fabric of the ribbon is
not lasting forever.
