In this country the children in immigrant families learn English much
faster than their parents. Then they start teaching it to their parents.
In the case of parents who in their children's opinion fail to demonstrate
sufficient interest, the children will force English upon their parents by
refusing to communicate with their parents in their native language. The
children's technique is very effective. The parents respond to their
children by giving them lessons on the importance of maintaining a sense of
respect and pride in their own national heritage, their native language, and
their customs and values. As a result, all members of the family benefit by
sharing their knowledge and learning, their experience, and their
communications skills with each other.
