I'm not much help with Compaqs,(except dismantling them) but give us your
non functioning config.sys anyway.

Real modems don't need drivers. PCMCIA on the other hand......
You don't need a packet driver, all you need is something that makes your
modem look like a COMM device. Any comm device.
Try this on Google: Enter (in quotes) the make and model of the modem.
Shorten until you get something.
