don't believe you ;))
(there are no sooo fast telephone modems, only ADSL or cable ;)
this is the speed between the computer and the modem
and it is abosultely _irrelevant_ !
the maximum speed is 56K and this is under normal circumnstances never
reached ! (gives you around 4.x KB/s)
before these there were 33K3, 28K8 and 14K4

this seems to be a real 56K modem than.

sure, because the pentium 160 has a 56 K modem, and the newer computer
seems to have an older (read slower) modem.

first seems to be an old 28k8 modem.
second is a 56K modem.
CL> What do these technical parameters XXX kbps actually mean?
maximum speed at which they can communicate.
28,8K means 28.8 kilobit/second.
The error you made is that there are no 115 Kbps modems.
(115 Kbps is the maximum speed at which serial PC ports can communicate,
but this is irrelevant, because the modem is slower than that !
